Will Johnson bailed at the last minute - he seems to have gotten the date he wanted after having to cut back from 2 girlfriends to "less than one" in the last few months, poor boy. Fortunately, Jeff Kropp was available on short notice (but, supposedly, "off the couch"), the weather was cooperative, and so there we were. We warmed up on Melvin (11a), then moved on to the Monolith where Jeff led POD and I finally redpointed Foreplay (11b). N.B. - Jeff broke a hold following, one of the tiny ones just before the big rest on the horn. The only thing breaking on Black Dagger (11c-11d) was ourselves - we flailed around some on TR. I can only manage a couple of strong tries per visit on this one - the finger traverse is just too destructive to my delicate fingers. I couldn't resist some Belizzi-baiting (he was trying the upper part of Ranger Bolts) from the Rim Trail on our way over to Men at Work (11b). I found my way to the top and rapped down to scope and scrub the upper part of the route. I preclipped the last bolt as well - this is probably a good idea as the rock cracked during drilling such that the biner will only go in from one side (plus it spins!) and the stance to clip is precarious. On my first RP attempt I was setting up to step over the roof near the third bolt when my right foothold snapped, sending me on a now familiar plunge into space - unfortunately the surprise nature of the fall caused me to slam my right arm pretty good and damage my confidence slighty, causing my next attempt to be pitiful. Jeff took over and flashed with the draws in place - nice going. On my last attempt I got up to the last bolt, hung, and worked out a doable sequence. This left just one East Side sport 11 I had not tried. So we hiked around and found the summit of the Tarantuala/Daddy Long Legs fin and set up the TR on the latter route (11d). It's interesting - edges and tricky balance on a just less than vertical wall - long stretches between the bolts (and brittle rock) will make it exciting to lead. Jeff fell twice, I hung a lot, but we had fun in the fading light. Per usual, we were the last climbers back to the parking lot. Joel
